No ‘hidden agenda’ in Irish legal reforms

Are crime and poverty linked?

Many sociologists have questioned whether there is a link between poverty and crime. A lot of research has been completed that indicates a positive correlation between the two and that those living in poorer areas may be more likely to require solicitors. East London, for example, is an area where poverty has been rife for some time, and also lays claim to an above average crime rate. The same is true for many other impoverished areas. This article suggests some of the reasons why there may be a substantial link between poverty and crime. NewLaw makes ABS move

Cardiff-based firm NewLaw has confirmed it’s among 44 ­organisations that experience to this point applied for alternative business structure status throughout the Solicitors Regulation Authority. The personal injury firm, established in 2004, submitted its application last week when the SRA became a licensing authority. NewLaw, which last year began moving towards a company management structure, has 270 staff, 65 of whom are solicitors. LSC blamed by Jewels for closure

A West Midlands family legal aid firm has blamed delays in payment by the Legal Services Commission for forcing it into administration. Jewels, founded in 1980 by sole director Mark Jewels (pictured), ceased trading on 28 December. The Lexcel-accredited firm, which had offices in Stafford and Cannock and employed 30 people, including eight solicitors, is now within the hands of administrators Begbies Traynor. Family legal aid accounted for 80% of Jewels’ work and it have been awarded a freelance within the latest tender round. The firm also did conveyancing and probate. read more … Read entire article »

Immigration service users ignorant of its closure

Clients of the Immigration Advisory Service (IAS) remain unaware that the not-for-profit provider went into administration six months ago and are still attempting to gain access to its premises, the Gazette has learned. Asbestos fund still on agenda, says government

The government has assured people affected by asbestos-related disease that a ‘fund of last resort’ remains at the agenda, nearly two years after a report called for its creation. Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) minister Lord Freud is thought to be in negotiations with the insurance industry about putting in place a fund for victims who cannot trace insurers. Londoners will fare worst from legal aid cuts – survey

Londoners may be hit hardest by the government’s planned legal aid cuts, a survey published by the Legal Action Group (LAG) has found. It has calculated that the capital will lose £9.33m under the proposed reforms in funding for housing, employment, debt, welfare benefits and immigration advice. The first chapter started wonderfully, articulately and straightforward.
