No ‘hidden agenda’ in Irish legal reforms

Are crime and poverty linked?
Many sociologists have questioned whether there is a link between poverty and crime. A lot of research has been completed that indicates a positive correlation between the two and that those living in poorer areas may be more likely to require solicitors. East London, for example, is an area where poverty has been rife for some time, and also lays claim to an above average crime rate. The same is true for many other impoverished areas. This article suggests some of the reasons why there may be a substantial link between poverty and crime. LSC blamed by Jewels for closure
A West Midlands family legal aid firm has blamed delays in payment by the Legal Services Commission for forcing it into administration. Jewels, founded in 1980 by sole director Mark Jewels (pictured), ceased trading on 28 December. The Lexcel-accredited firm, which had offices in Stafford and Cannock and employed 30 people, including eight solicitors, is now within the hands of administrators Begbies Traynor. Londoners will fare worst from legal aid cuts – survey
Londoners may be hit hardest by the government’s planned legal aid cuts, a survey published by the Legal Action Group (LAG) has found. It has calculated that the capital will lose £9.33m under the proposed reforms in funding for housing, employment, debt, welfare benefits and immigration advice.
